Starters

Your starter's basic function is quite simple actually. It's job is to rotate the engine fast enough for the engine to start. It is only designed to do this for a few seconds until the engine can start combustion and run on it's own. Starters are not designed for extended cranking. In fact cranking the starter for more than a few seconds at a time can cause serious damage.

Alternators

Your alternators roll and function is a little more complex and it's work cycle is considerably longer than your starters. It provides the electrical energy to run you vehicle. It powers your ignition system, all the electrical accessories and it restores your batteries charge so that the battery can provide the temporary power required to start the engine and run accessories when the engine is off.
